My students need flexible seating options to allow them to feel comfortable in class; the futon and pub table will be able to meet this need. The lamp and storage bins will add a homey feel.
I Teach AP Psychology, Psychology, and World History course at a high school with a high number of low-income families. These students are working hard in the classroom, and are often dealing with concepts that are very abstract. I am hoping to bring in alternative seating to the classroom to help my students better learn with a comfortable, engaging, and inviting classroom.
In my AP class, not only do the students engage in class activities and learning to discover the world of Psychology; but, they also prepare to take the AP exam in the spring.
This permits my students a chance to work to earn college credit before they even graduate high school. This is a great opportunity for many students to discover their passion for Psychology and jump-start their dreams of pursuing a career in Psychology or other related careers. With this project, we can help to make these students’ dreams reality as we help them reach their academic goals
My students in my World History and Psychology classes are wonderful students facing many challenges; personal, financial, and academic. I would love to turn my room into a learning lounge where students can feel at home
My Project
My students find it hard to concentrate when learning because of the uncomfortable chairs and uninspired decor of the room. Also, some of my students consider my room to be a sort of "safe space" from teenage problems such as breakups, bullying, harassment, bad influences, and other stressful situations. I want my students to know that they mean so much to me whenever they step into my classroom and that they are always welcomed here regardless of what is going on. I want to be able to create a safe zone for my students so that they won't hesitate to come to my room. With the materials from this project, I will be able to create a homey environment. The futon and pub tables will allow students to sit in a comfortable setting; it will not feel as institutional as the traditional desk seating. The lamp will allow us to create a softer lighting and give students a break from the harsh fluorescent. The storage ottoman will not only provide additional seating but it will add storage space.
Research has shown that students excel in a flexible seating arrangement.
This way student can choose a seating option that works best for his or her individual needs. In my classroom, I also would like to create an opportunity to encourage students to participate and engage in classroom activities. Each time a student engages in a lesson, earns a score of 97% on a unit test, or other key classroom behaviors, s/he will earn a ticket for a raffle so they will have a chance to choose one of the highest desired seating spots in the room. I feel this classroom environment will allow students to feel comfortable and increase academic performance.
