My class is an Autistic preschool class consisting of 6-9 students who range in age from 3-5. Many of them are non-verbal and have sensory, communication, motor and social issues. There are a number of methods & techniques used in the education of autistic children that include modifying curriculum and materials to fit each student's individual learning style. The children in my class are visual learners so we use a variety of pictures, charts and visual representations when teaching. We also use a variety of concrete and hands on materials for students who learn well through their tactile senses and explore. The students LOVE music and circle time. Everyday we have music and circle time 2-3 times a day. During this time the students work on their literacy skills as well as imitation, listening and communication skills.
A typical day in my class includes 1:1 or 1:2 time where students work on their fine motor, academic, and imitation skills.
They also have circle time where they learn to sit and attend to the teacher, practice imitation skills, and participate in a group setting. Most of the activities during our day are hands on activities which include many file folder games and visuals. The students are at school from 9-2 so having a wide variety of activities is important. We are work hard on teaching the students literacy skills, communication skills, fine motor skills and social skills.
My Project
The students will use the big books and book props to help them increase their literacy skills as well as listening skills during group and even on an individual basis. The props can be used to teach communication as well as literacy as they use them to retell the story heard during circle. Even the students who are non-verbal will be able to retell stories using the props.
This project will improve my classroom because it will give us a new variety of materials to use to teach literacy.
The Autistic preschoolers love music and books and having visuals they need to accompany the stories and songs will increase their learning and enjoyment of literacy. The props will also allow the students to explore materials with their hands which allows them to learn tactile and fine motor skills.
