Help me give my students the opportunity to learn letters and sight words through movement during PE class.

My Students
Our school is a Title I school, meaning at least half of our students get free or reduced-price lunch. We have about 25% of our student body for whom English is a Second language. About 10% of those students are newcomers, who speak little, if no English.
Our youngest students often come to school without the basic literacy knowledge often found with 4- and 5-year-olds.
Because of this, we try to include literacy in all areas of instruction.
My Project
I would like to see my students increase their literacy skills through movement in PE class. Students will toss the giant dice and identify the letter. They then will skip or move in some way to the hula hoop with the corresponding letter. Once there, they will perform a catching/tossing task to meet the SHAPE PE standards associated with catching and throwing.
Who would think that students could increase their literacy during gym class?
At our elementary school we focus on threading literacy throughout all areas of the curriculum, including Physical Education. This activity can easily be adapted to meet the literacy needs of students in the upper grades, like sight word recognition and vocabulary development.
More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
