My students need a Beginning Sounds Box, Math Activity Center, Ready-To-Go Learning Pack, and Learn to Count Mats to help us learn literacy and math concepts in a hands-on way.
My class is an autistic preschool class consisting of 6-9 students who range in age from 3-5. Many of them are nonverbal and have sensory, communication, motor and social issues. There are a number of methods and techniques used in the education of autistic children that include modifying curriculum and materials to fit each student's individual learning style.
The children in my class are visual learners, so we use a variety of pictures, charts and visual representations when teaching. We also use a variety of concrete and hands-on materials for students who learn well through their tactile senses and explore.
My class is an autistic preschool class consisting of 6-9 students who range in age from 3-5.
Many of them are nonverbal and have sensory, communication, motor and social issues. A typical day in my class includes 1:1 or 1:2 time, where students work on their fine motor, academic, and imitation skills. They also have circle time where they learn to sit and attend to the teacher, practice imitation skills, and participate in a group setting.
Most of the activities during our day are hands-on activities which include many file folder games and visuals. The students are at school from 9-2, so having a wide variety of activities is important. We are working hard on teaching the students literacy skills, communication skills, fine motor skills and social skills.
My Project
The autistic students will use these resources to work on their literacy and math skills. I have several students who know their ABC's but struggle with letter sounds, and the Beginning Sound Awareness Box will be an excellent way to work on this skill. Number identification is another area my students need to work on, and since they love playdough, the Early Math Dough Mats will combine these two skills. The Ready-to-Go Learning Pack is filled with many hands-on activities that teach colors, shapes, sorting, letters, numbers and more. We will be able to use these different activities to tailor learning on an individual basis.
These donations will improve my classroom and improve the lives of my students by giving us fun, hands-on activities that teach many important skills.
We are always in need of activities for students, since everything we do is on an individual basis. All of my autistic preschoolers need to learn different skills. Having a variety of materials will help my students by allowing us to address their areas of need.
