Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As an elementary school social worker, I am lucky enough to work with every student at my school! Whether through whole class lessons, small group instruction, or individual sessions, I get to meet, teach, and learn from each one of our amazing students.
The students I work with in small groups and individual sessions are typically facing big challenges or changes; this often causes big feelings!
Students meet with me to learn vital life skills, such as emotion recognition, self-regulation, empathy, teamwork, and problem solving. My students are curious, resilient, kind, and eager to learn!
My Project
Similarly to last school year, this year students have faced many changes and challenges that have impacted their learning - virtual learning days, COVID-19 spikes, quarantines, masks, physical distancing, and more. These challenges have taken a toll on students and teachers alike.
My hope is to use the tools from this project to foster an environment of resilience and growth mindset.
With new curriculum, I will be able to provide students with fresh and exciting content that can easily be modified to virtual learning if needed. Tools such as, calming kits, Legos, puzzles, and books will help me teach students the vital life skills they may have missed out on while navigating through a pandemic.
The materials on this project will specifically help me teach our kindergarten, first, and second graders who have never experienced a typical school year. With materials specific to their age and grade level, I will be able to increase life skills like, confidence, self-control, and skills for learning.
