My students need to opportunties to experience healthy foods and see how they are grown using Aerogardens. A number of my students have physical limitations, so traditional gardening is not an option for them.
My students are a group of the most wonderful young adults diagnosed with intellectual/developmental disabilities/Autism you will ever meet. They live life to the fullest. They range in age from 14 to 20 and can stay with me until 21 years old. We are located in what is a high poverty high school and more than half the students come from low income homes.
They enjoy learning and greet each day with a smile and positive attitude.
They love taking part in all that high school has to offer and make friends wherever they go. My students tackle their classwork much like they tackle life, all in with a positive attitude. They enjoy being at school and learning new skills.
My Project
Many of my students do not have access to fresh vegetables at home and due to physical limitations cannot participate in a typical gardening project at school. These Aero-gardens set up in centers around the classroom can help students learning so many life skills. The students can learn about not only growing and caring for herbs, flowers and vegetables, but also the science of growing plants. We can use measurement and charting skills to track the growth of the plants, life skills to care for and cook with the herbs and vegetables as well as reading/technology skills to learn about the plants. I'd also like to teach the students how to use the herbs to make soap with the soap making kits that we can sell in the school store.
