We are wanting to create a learning environment in our Life Skills classroom that teaches students basic life skills to set them up for their future. The dishes, spoons, and utensils that are color coded will aid the students to correctly set a table. The cleaning kits and accessories are going to help the students learn that when you make a mess or see a mess that it needs to be cleaned up properly. Students will learn how to properly wash, dry and put away dishes where they go in our kitchen. Students will learn how to properly address an envelope with the mailbox set because it might be how they have to pay their bills some day. We want our students to be functioning members of society so helping them learn these skills now will set them up for that. Our students are on many levels of learning so setting them up for success is a main part of our job. The food sets will allow the students to take an order from someone and assemble their food properly.
The grocery store is something we are going to hit hard on next year because everyone needs to know how to grocery shop.
We are going to do a unit about planning a meal, making a list, budgeting, going shopping, and cooking it with them. The sensory items throughout the list would be great because we have many students that need a sensory break sometimes. Having this on hand in our classroom for them would give them the opportunity to regulate themselves without having to leave class. Setting these kids up for success is the most important thing to teachers in our classroom.
