Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have 19 students who are all non-English speaking students and are all mostly from low-income families. They all come from homes where the parents unfortunately do not speak English, and they do not have a role model in order to learn the English language from. My students are energetic little kids who love to learn and are very excited about being in school. However, since my students are all non-English speaking students, they need a lot of visuals and hands-on activities in order to learn and make the learning process more meaningful. Also, due to the lack of knowledge from the part of the parents on how to help their children, I feel that my students need a double dosage of educational fun activities in school in order to be up to par with their counterparts and succeed in school
My Project
In order to help my students be kindergarten ready, I need to make sure all of my students know their letter names and sounds. The Float and Find Alphabet Bubbles, Learning Crayons Word Building Center, Road to Reading Activity Center, and the Touch and Read CVC Words
will allow my students to practice their letter knowledge in a fun and kid friendly way.
My students will find the letters during center time in the water table and sound out the letters with the Learning Crayons Word Building Center game. However, knowing letters is only the beginning of what students are expected to learn in pre-k. By using these fun and interactive letter games my students will be able to engage in learning activities without even realizing that they are practicing a skill that could be boring if done with paper and pencil.
Teaching Prek is very challenging because we are expected to teach through the use of fun and hands on activities and avoid worksheets. Creating games and hands on activities is not only costly but time consuming considering that our planning time is limited. In Prek we are expected to create everything from scratch or purchase games but yet we are not given funds like the teachers from kinder and the higher grades. Also, our planning time is shorter but yet we are expected to create fun and hands on activities during this time, complete paperwork, parent conferences, reply to Dojo messages, check emails , attend faculty meetings, attend grade level meetings, prepare materials for the following day, prepare lesson plans etc. Therefore, I ask that you please help me provide my students with these fun letter and reading games so that I can better prepare my students to become strong readers.
