My Students
Located in New York City, the majority of our students at our elementary school are from low income/poverty level socioeconomic backgrounds. Most of our students qualify for free school lunch and many receive support from other community programs. We also have a high rate of students who come from various cultures, including Haitian Creole, Spanish, and Arabic speaking households, and present at school as English language learners.
Most of my students are enrolled in substantially separate special education classrooms.
I have students with a broad range of disabilities ranging from non-verbal, delayed language, severe articulation disorders, and immature social skills. They carry various diagnoses such as developmental delay, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down Syndrome, Cleft Palate, Learning Disabilities, Emotional Disturbances, Attention Deficit Disorders, cognitive impairments, language based difficulties and stuttering disorders.
My Project
My school is a located in inner NYC. I service students who are in grades pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. The students are all in a Title I program where 100% of our students free breakfast and lunch Mondays through Fridays of the school year. I am a speech and language teacher. Although I have many lower functioning students that are non verbal, I also provide services to students at a higher level of functioning that need my support to access the academic curriculum. These students have the desire to utilize technology during instructional time. The students are very creative using technology.
I need a laptop to use when the computer lab is used for another class.
Throughout the day, the school's only computer class is being used for other classes. The laptop that I was using until now has unfortunately died and the school does not have money in their limited budget to replace it. I am not able to meet the needs of my students without a laptop.
By having access to a computer, students will have the opportunity to interact with digital media daily. The computer will allow students to access the Internet for research and online resources in various areas of the curriculum. Specific activities on the laptop will be used for differentiation in reading and language. All students will benefit in that they will have the tools and education on the safe and appropriate use of this type technology. Not only will students learn how to use technology, they will use technology to learn.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
