My Students

Did you ever consider how children with disabilities express themselves to the world? Difficulties with language can make it hard to express thoughts, but art can be a universal language. For my students who struggle to use scissors and communicate, a die cutter can help them easily access art.

My special needs preschool and kindergarten-aged students have been identified as having developmental delays.

My classroom can include students with a variety of impairments, including Down syndrome, autism, intellectual disability, visual, hearing, or orthopedic impairments, specific learning disability, medical needs, and more. In this coming year, the district plans to add a reverse mainstream component that will include a few typically developing preschoolers to act as positive role models. They attend a public elementary school and range in age from 2-6 years old. My students are so eager to learn and are excited about coming to school. Our Title One school is located in a high-poverty, high-crime area and more than 80% of our students are identified as economically disadvantaged. Our city and surrounding area are home to several major US military installations, as well as a world-class shipyard that is the sole ship builder of the US Navy's air craft carriers.

My Project

Our friends at Donors Choose recently funded a Fiskars Fuse Creativity System for our special education class. We are using it to create student artwork, classroom visuals, and to stimulate language. With it, we received a few die cutter shapes. We would like to be able to expand the ability to use the system with other shapes. We are requesting the square, oval, bird design sets (and expansion packs to use with those shapes), ornament design set, sun design set, circle expansion set, and ink pads. These different shapes will give us a nice variety for creating in our classroom. The ink pads allow us to add stamp designs at the same time the shape is cut.

The students get so excited to use the die cutter machine with teacher help.

It really is fun to put the paper and die in one side of the machine, turn the crank handle, and watch the cut shape drop out on the other side! You can imagine the chatter and buzz it prompts. This is critical, because we are trying to encourage talking with our language-delayed students and appropriate social skills with turn-taking. Thank you for considering support to our project.
