Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

We have seen an increase of students with limited verbal expression at our school. As a school based Speech Language Pathologist, I support students with finding ways to communicate using pictures, words, or voice output devices. My lessons are developed around bi-weekly themes for the students using songs and stories. Some students have difficulty with joint attention and word knowledge. A first step in teaching students to communicate is to establish joint attention and participation by using high-interest materials with manipulative items.

By supporting this project, you will not only provide hands-on activities and story books, but you will improve vocabulary and communication for many young learners.

Learning Resource materials provide small items that the students can find within containers. When paired with songs and stories around a central theme, these activities provide multiple opportunities to practice communication, such as requesting a turn and asking for help to open items and to label or identify the objects. The use of core vocabulary helps build language skills beyond labeling. Augmentative Communication Devices such as the AbleNet iTalk2 give students a voice and a way to comment during lessons.

Communication is key to successful participation in the academic setting. Engaging young learners to attend and participate in language lessons builds vocabulary and social skills. Your support can help my students on their language journey. Thanks!
