Learning Language Through Movement In Miss Mitzi's Class

My Students

My students are ages 3-4 years old, newly diagnosed with autism and speech and language impairment, some with developmental delays. Their school day is highly structured using picture schedules for transitions, they learn in a language rich environment to encourage language and communication development, and have sensory breaks to address fine/gross motor development and sensory processing.

I love watching my students grow in independence, express themselves using words and or pictures, and even doing the one or two actions to The Wheels on the Bus is a joy to watch!

My Project

The games, sensory body sock, and musical instruments I am requesting will be used to address different target areas of development: language skill, gross motor and fine motor movement. The students will be expected to request which specific instrument or game piece they would like to have during choice time or music and movement. Language will be expected to include attributes such as color and size.

The flannel board will be used as an interactive tool to supplement songs and story books during opening circle, further supporting expressive and receptive language, as well as reading comprehension.

It will support social skills development because the students will be expected to take their turn.
