Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach kindergarten in a diverse, high-needs school. Many of my students speak another language besides English at home and are learning English in school. For about half of my students, kindergarten is their first academic experience. Each day, we have a dedicated block of time devoted to teaching my English language learners basic English skills. For some of my students, kindergarten is the first time they've had to communicate in English, so they need to learn very basic skills, such as introducing themselves or asking a friend what his/her name is or asking questions for basic needs, like using the bathroom. Other students have had some exposure to English, so they are working on higher language skills, such as asking and answering more detailed questions. A small group of students is bilingual and these students are working on improving their academic language. Using pictures is an excellent way to help all language learners grasp a concept. For example, recently we were talking about fruits and vegetables and ways to prepare them. Even my highest language learners did not know what a zucchini is, but when I showed them a picture of one, they were able to identify it and say whether they like it or not. If we had a Hewlett-Packard all-in-one printer, I would be able to provide color pictures for my students to help them master the English language. Currently, if I want to print pictures, I have to print them on our school printer, which only prints grainy black and white images. Images are much harder to identify and describe when they are black and white! Furthermore, we could use this HP printer with our digital camera to print pictures of my students in action (sliding, running, swinging, working) so we can practice using verbs and pronouns (he is running, she is working, they are swinging). English language development time is fun when students get to use pictures of themselves and their friends to practice basic English grammar. This HP printer would be a benefit to my English language learners and the rest of my students. Your help will go a long way towards ensuring my students have the language skills they need to succeed in first grade and beyond! Thank you!
