My Students
Do you remember how much fun you had playing with Legos when you were younger? Your imagination would go wild while creating magnificent castles and magical scenes. What if I told you my 2nd graders could build their reading and writing skills by building their own Lego creation in the classroom?
I have 26 enthusiastic learners in my classroom.
They are eager to learn, and I am constantly trying to find engaging ways to quench their thirst for knowledge. However, when it comes to writing, it can be challenging to get my students motivated to write. "I have nothing to write about," is something I hear quite often. Many lessons have been spent on teaching these students where to gain ideas for writing, but it still proves to be difficult when that pencil hits the paper. Writing skills are still developing at this age and my students don't understand the need to write. Our school has tried a variety of writing programs to improve writing. My students are extremely creative and have the potential to be amazing readers and writers. The key is just getting them motivated!
My Project
The Lego Story Starter kit is a hands-on tools that will help teach my students the basic mechanics of a well-composed story. Students must work together in small groups to promote collaboration. Using the pieces provided in the Lego kit, students will create their beginning, middle, and end of a story from their imagination. After students have had time to build, they can use the online software, Story Visualizer, to organize and compose their stories in fun ways. They can add a picture of their creation into the backdrop of different settings, create speech bubbles for their characters, and truly take an ownership of their writing.
The Story Starter kit can also be used in reading lessons by having students retell the story by creating it in Legos. They can help build a setting of a particular book they are reading. It's possibilities to enhance Language Arts skills are endless!
By providing this kit for my class, it will help spark an excitement over writing.
Students will see it as a fun experience as opposed to just something their teacher makes them do. I feel if they are able to make their own creations, they will take more of an ownership over their writing. They will worker harder to create something they are really proud of. My job as a teacher is to create engaged learners and I really feel like this is the way!
