The diverse group of kiddos that attend my school come from all over the city of Pittsburgh. Most of our students reside in the Lawrenceville and Bloomfield communities. Our school qualifies for free and reduced lunch due to the low socioeconomic status of residents. I love my school and the district of Pittsburgh Public but it breaks my heart that we are so limited in what we can supply to our students. Parents are working so hard to put food on the table and clothes on their back that I feel it is my job to advocate to support opportunities for learning and growth. Kindergarten students have walked a much different path entering school during a pandemic. They have done a tremendous job navigating the technology and learning how to express themselves in a new and unusual setting. I am so proud of the way they have handled this new and confusing time. They deserve everything I can give them to be successful at home!
My Project
Due to the COVID 19 Crisis District funds have been used to supply students with computers and other devices to enable students to learn online. Paper materials and hands on manipualtives were not in the budget but essential for students to fully participate in online learning. We provided the students with their curriculum workbooks and learning kits from the wonderful education partnership, but those materials have been used. The writing journals would provided the necessary paper and lines that students need to learn writing and letter formation. Pencils and colored pencils will enable my students to thrive when it comes to comprehension writing and drawing pictures to match their writing, which are part of the common core standards. Tens frames and counters will give the students needed manipulatives for counting and quantity association.
