This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach first grade in a large, urban school district.

My school is a Title I school.

My students come from a variety of ethnic and low socio-economic backgrounds. We have a high ELL population.

Last year, unfortunately, our school was labeled as a "failing school" due to low state test scores. Our district has also been affected by recent budget cuts. Despite the challenges our students face, our students, parents, and staff work together to give them the best possible education they deserve.

My Project

The lack of textbooks for Math and Language Arts in my classroom has forced a different approach to teaching and learning. My students need materials to create interactive notebooks that will be used for class examples as well as for other activities in which my students will be able to process the information presented in class. We will use the copy paper to make copies of the information we will put in the spiral notebooks. Glue sticks will secure our notes. The magazine holders will help us keep our notebooks organized by tables.

Interactive notebooks have students create a resource to use as they continue to extend their learning.

An interactive notebook works as a textbook for students that is theirs. Students are going back and reviewing the prior pages repeatedly and therefore building exposure to the material each time.
