Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach English learners, some of whom are newcomers to the country and speak no English and others who have been here a limited amount of time and speak little English.
We work all year to learn how to grow from failure and use it to get a step closer to success.
Many of my students come to me with a sense of apathy formed from the lack of experiences of academic success in the past. We're a Title I school with more than 80% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch.
My Project
In my classroom, I try to spread a love for learning. One thing every kid loves is playing. They naturally learn and explore through play from a very early age. Once they start school, we slowly pull the play and creativity from them.
My goal with this project is to allow my students to learn through play the way they have for years in the past; research has shown that playing has been an effective way for children to learn even from birth.
Older kids can benefit just as much, and the memorable experience that comes along with learning through play will be long-lasting and enable them to gain a full grasp of the content.
Both of the escape room games will be used to teach literacy content like poetry, reading comprehension, and literary devices. The games (Wordical, Blurt, Scategories, Super Sleuth, Word Around, and Play on Words) will all be used to develop vocabulary while teaching students critical thinking skills and allowing them to practice their speaking and listening in English. The Grammar in a Jar and Figurative Language in a Jar will be used to teach grammar rules and figure of speech items that are important to the language development of ESL students.
