My Students
Imagine, for a moment, that you could not read. Now, imagine that you can read, but you can not recall or internalize the information. Finally, imagine hearing information, but not being able to use it effectively. These aspects of life we take for granted are the everyday struggles of my students.
My students are wonderful children.
Unfortunately, they have a lot going against them. Many come from homes where what they are learning is not reinforced outside of school. Whether it be due to a language barrier (many of my students' families do not speak English), or due to lack of parent involvement, the majority of their learning happens in the few short hours per day they are in school. On top of these barriers, my students have been diagnosed with expressive and/or receptive language delays as well as delays in phonemic and phonological awareness skills. They have difficulty with reading and listening comprehension, and writing and literacy, the very foundations of a successful education.
My Project
My students require a variety of materials to address their assorted speech and language delays. Among the resources I have chosen for this project are games that will develop literacy skills, engaging activities to develop phonological awareness (a crucial precursor to fluent reading), exercises that will improve reading comprehension, as well as materials targeting vocabulary and auditory memory. With the materials I have requested, I will be able to provide effective intervention that will facilitate my students' abilities to access the curriculum. Along with being effective, the materials will be engaging and enjoyable, which will make them eager to learn. The children will learn efficient strategies to combat their expressive and receptive language delays as well as their delays in phonemic and phonological awareness skills. For the majority of my students, their teachers, the administration and I are their sole advocates.
