Learning Is a Snap With Memory Cards

My students need memory cards and battery chargers to make use of our class set of digital cameras.

My Students

The students at my school attend a school that has a history of 50+ years. It is a neighborhood school, so a majority of our students live in the neighborhood, and know each other from outside school events. We are also an open enrollment school, meaning many of our student choose to provide transportation in order to attend our school. We have an English Language Learner population which is mainly Hispanic. My students are bright, curious, and highly motivated by projects and hands-on materials.

My Project

By adding memory and charging stations to the class set of digital cameras in the art room, students will be able to use them to learn concepts such as framing, id cropping, editing, and subject matter. These concepts are applicable not only to photography, but to planning an artwork in general. Artists consider how others will view their work, and what message their work is conveying.

All of my students are required to take art, but not all of my students learn in the same way.

I strive to give my students a variety of rich and valuable learning experiences that they might not otherwise have. Most students are now using phones and tablets to take pictures, but many do not think about what makes a picture interesting, or what one does with a picture if not using it for social media. Adding the use of cameras will help more students find success in learning important concepts in art, and in technology.

Finally, I believe it is important to integrate other subject areas into art lessons, in order to make sure that all students have lasting learning experiences. With the use of digital cameras, I will be able to integrate writing with photography, helping students to hone in on descriptive writing skills. By adding sufficient memory to our cameras, along with the ability to charge them, my students can also participate in the yearbook design by taking pictures, and capturing important moments in their classes.
