We are a small neighborhood Charter School. We only have two classes per grade level for a total of 196 students. We pride ourselves on focusing on the individual student and offering exciting learning opportunities! We try to give students as much exposure to the sciences as possible. Science and technology are the future!

In 5th grade, it is expected that we focus intensely on science in the classroom in order to prepare for the state testing. Unfortunately, since testing in science is only done in the 5th grade at this time, other grades do not see the importance of teaching basic concepts. Therefore, we spend a lot of time catching up and moving forward. When you teach science it becomes a battle on how to give students the knowledge they need without overwhelming students.

I have found a wonderful series of books that incorporates science concepts into comics. The students enjoy reading the books and even request to read them on their own time. I would like to take this excitement about the comics and turn it into a learning opportunity where I can combine science concepts and technology. I would like to give students the opportunity to put themselves into their own science-based comic. By working in groups the students will be able to use the digital cameras to take pictures of themselves to build a storyboard. The students will be responsible for staging their photos, printing them out and developing the text that would teach their peers about their chosen science topic.

Students who are able to teach others obviously know what they are talking about. This is just another way to solidify the information that they are learning. Having this experience will help them apply the information during tests and in future years. Using their interest in the comics and technology will help increase their excitement about the project. I feel it is my job to take the fear away from science and develop students who realize science is all around us and that it can be fun! With your help, I will be able to do just that!
