Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My future Autism class is being moved from another campus. They have been all year without a teacher-having different substitute teachers in an out throughout the year. After visiting the class for the 1st time, my heart was very sad. These kids are surviving on bare bones materials. There are only a few sensory items to calm them, no comfortable seating, no hands-on activities, no alternative communication options, and the list goes on.
Children with Autism learn and communicate differently than children without, so they require different materials to help them have academic success.
I want my students to return to school in August to a room that is inviting, comforting, and stimulating for them. The sensory materials I have chosen will give them the needed sensory input they require throughout the day. The tape and Velcro are crucial to making visual aids and classroom set up. Children with Autism are visual learners and have difficulty with social cues. The social emotional picture books will help give them concrete examples of how to behave socially.
I've only spent a few minutes with my new class and I'm already in love! Each of them is completely unique-no two students are alike. The saying goes, "If you know 1 person with Autism, then you know 1 person with Autism." Each of the materials on my wish list have been carefully thought out and intentional to what my classroom experience has taught me. I appreciate your consideration!
