This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students come from several different communities in Central Downtown Phoenix. They are absolutely incredible and resilient. As a young child, you are taught to self-soothe and regulate your emotions by watching the adults in your life help soothe and regulate your emotions with you. A majority of our students have never had that adult in their life and are now learning how to do this for this first time. I will by their side and am thankful for any support you can provide!

Being able to self-regulate their emotions, at the same level as other student their age, will help them become even more successful in their futures.

The “breathing owl”, zone poster, and other sensory tools will be used whole group or in our calm corner. I will use the social games during workshop times so they can practice the skills with their classmates. I will use the books to introduce emotions to the students and teach how to talk about them. My goal is for each of them to have a pair of earbuds in a pouch. Music has been a huge game changer for my students and helps them relax and focus. The sand timers, organization bins, clipboards, charts, and Velcro and magnetic dots are all management tools needed for the calm corner and SEL activities.

I have had a bright classroom theme which can overstimulate students with disabilities and emotional needs. In my project, there are items that will go towards creating a neutral space for them - borders, classroom lights, and some general resources to help them feel more confident. For example, a lot of my 3rd graders don’t know their alphabet so I added a few classroom items to support them. I want them to have what they need to succeed.
