I teach at a Title I elementary school. My students are diverse, enthusiastic, and brilliant! This year I get to work with 22 kindergarten students who all come from very different places in the world.
We have been learning via Comprehensive Distance Learning all year.
My Kinder students are in need of friends and social-emotional growth. My students come from a wide variety of cultures and languages. We have over 41 languages spoken in our school! I teach many English Language Learners. In fact, half my class is learning English as a second language. My goal is to make coming back to school a pleasurable experience. I want them to make friends and still stay safe. I want to lessen their anxiety. And I want our time in class under a hybrid model to be meaningful and successful.
My Project
I am asking for a class set of foldable lap desks for our upcoming hybrid learning model. This starts as early as April 5, 2021. I will be teaching half of my students in the morning and half of my students in the afternoon. Each child will have a designated space in the classroom to work and play. Due to the spatial limits (35 square feet per child) tables are not going to be easily used. I would like to provide each child their own lap desk which will hold their school supplies and give them a washable surface to work on.
Keeping my students safe in the classroom is my number one priority.
I will be the one cleaning all surfaces, monitoring their spaces, helping them play with each other in an untraditional format, and keeping my students as healthy as I can. By having individual lap desks for each child I can ensure that they will have room to play, room to hold their own supplies, and feel a sense of belonging in our classroom.
