Learning in Motion

Help me give my students the opportunity to see real-world data. These motion detectors will provide students the opportunity to graph their own motion and match their motion to graphs.

My Students

Fourteen year olds are some of the quirkiest creatures on earth and my 8th graders in Joplin, MO are no exception. Their creativity, demand for real-world applications, laughter, and constant questioning of the status quo leave me enjoying everyday of teaching.

My students love to ask "Why?" and challenge my answers if they are not acceptable.

I love to find new ways to engage students in the material and help deepen their mathematical thinking.

My Project

Students struggle to understand real world relationships in distance vs time graphs. While frequently I utilize video examples , some students still have a disconnect. These motion detectors will allow students to engage the material by seeing how the data changes as they change their position.

When students see their own motion graphed in real-time they deepen their understanding of the relationship between movement and time.

The competitive nature of getting their motion to exactly match the existing graph will have kids begging to try more examples and to challenge others to be more accurate.

The motion detector can also be utilized during my flipped classroom videos that students are able to watch while at home.
