Learning in Color: Giving Students Equitable Access to Quality-Art Supplies
Help me give my students access to a wide variety of new art supplies our school budget doesn't usually allow for. This includes new glaze, ink, and paint colors, paint markers, and new brushes.
I am very blessed to teach at a wonderful school that is full of a wide range of students' backgrounds. With 69.7% minority enrollment, our middle school is a bright hub of students with varied and rich traditions. Every day, as one of the art teachers, I get to enjoy celebrating in these backgrounds and traditions with my students. Art is also one of the most popular elective choices with over 400 of our 650 student population making it their first choice. With so many students in our program my teaching partner and I try to provide as many opportunities as we can with our yearly budget.
However; facing a 33% reduction to our budget in recent years we have been struggling to provide beyond just the basics for our 400 students.
We strongly believe that our students deserve the same creative opportunities as our neighboring schools that have larger funds. This includes access to ceramics, printmaking, fiber arts, painting, and sculpture. All subjects that require more unique and expensive art supplies. Students learn spatial awareness, design, and 3 dimensional thinking through ceramic projects. They learn about weaving traditions around the world and native Huichol art through fiber arts. They learn about creating accessible art through printmaking, and so much more. By providing these supplies we are able to further educate all of our students in techniques and wider world artistic traditions.
By broadening the creative opportunities students have in our classes we ensure that every student finds success through creative pursuits. Our art classes are designed with understanding that while some students will excel in drawing or painting, others will thrive with clay and wire. These supplies will enable us to better reach this goal and provide for every student.
