Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is a K-8 school in East Oakland functioning as a center of health within the neighborhoods surrounding it, providing wrap-around services in education, health, housing, and job training. The long-term goal is to create a model for urban education that prioritizes the needs of youth and families as the pathway to building healthy and sustainable communities across the U.S. and around the world.

The name of the our school was inspired by the book of poetry based on the writings of Tupac Shakur released in 1999.

This vivid image captures the need to celebrate the tenacity and will of the rose that against-all-odds, finds a way to grow in the inhospitable and toxic environment of the concrete that it might transform the concrete into a rose garden.

My Project

My students love reading books and a great incentive to learning how to read is to use tablets and their engaging apps that teach reading skills.

My classroom doesn't have enough tablets for a whole table group to use and students have to share.

Sharing tablets is fun, but it's not completely differentiated since students are at various reading levels. I have seen the love of tablets in my classroom with the current ones we have and know that having enough for one table group will take their engagement and learning to the next level!

Each table in my room seats five students and during Read to Self time, all tables read from their book bags and one table gets to use the iPads during this time. Each table group is designated the iPads each day. Because I don't have enough tablets for all five students that sit in a table group, students have to share an tablets. This causes noise and distractions since the iPad Reading games are loud. Sharing also isn't differentiated, although the apps are. Having two extra tablets in our room means that each kid in class will benefit from using the iPad alone with headphones and their Reading work would be differentiated. This will greatly benefit my student's love for Reading and aid so much in their Reading growth!

Thanks for helping my students grow in Reading!
