My Project

I teach six 7th and 8th graders with autism in NYC. My students learn best using hands-on materials. During the last four months of school, our reading units are exploration and discovery and health and safety. During these units, I want to teach my students basic cooking skills like using a microwave, healthy eating, following a recipe, and cooking safety. My students have been learning how to read measuring cups and how to read recipes.

I teach my students life skills to make them as independent as possible.

Cooking and kitchen safety are important life skills for my students to learn. Cooking activities give my students opportunities to work on communication skills.

I have included a variety of items that we will use. We will make different recipes. We make play dough which uses flour, vegetable oil, and food coloring. The students enjoy making instant pudding. We will practice spreading toppings like sunflower butter, jelly, and marshmallow fluff on rice cakes, bread, and graham crackers. At school, we get a lot of fruit at breakfast and lunch which we will use to make fruit salad and fruit kabobs. We will make recipes like dirt cups, smoothies, cereal treats, fruit kabobs, trail mix, and different snacks. We have done some cooking activities this year and my students enjoy these activities. I have included oatmeal, mac and cheese, and hot chocolate so we can practice using a microwave. In addition to cooking, my students will help clean up. My students will use dish soap to clean the dishes.
