My Students
My class is composed of an inspiring group of 32 5th graders. They come from a variety of backgrounds. We also have students with independent education plans to accommodate their special needs, as well as several English language learners, and students with diagnosed ADHD.
My students come to class every day bursting with a desire to talk, listen and learn.
In writing, they share stories of their family and friends. In math, we work together to fine tune strategies for solving some really hard problems. During reading, you will find the students working in groups, or gathered in a large circle to discuss big ideas and themes in our literature. Conversation and interaction drive our learning and our day. Yes, they can, and do, work independently and with focus when necessary, but even these periods hum with an energy unique to ten year olds.
My Project
The social science framework for fifth grade is the history of the United states. Unfortunately, history texts are dry and lack a diverse lens, especially for Fifth graders studying the story of our country for the first time.
In reading "Heart and Soul: The Story of America and African Americans" the children will learn the history of our country through a dynamic African American lens.
The text of this book is a rich and accessible resource for middle graders to learn about the people that built the United States. The illustrations are evocative and provide the visual cues that are vital for young learners.
With a book in the hand of every student, we will participate in a shared reading of the text before the students move into smaller collaborative groups and work on a closer reading of an assigned section. Once they have achieved a deeper understanding of the material, the students will create an "artifact" and present their understanding to the whole class.
