it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Did you ever have that boring history class that was nothing but memorizing isolated facts, dates, and people's names? Instead of seeing history as useless information about the past, I want history to come alive for my students! To do this we need books, books, and more books.
I teach a group of bright, enthusiastic fifth graders at an urban elementary school.
They are ethnically and socioeconomically diverse. Like most schools across the country, we are facing severe budget cuts. There is little funding for class materials, including books.
My Project
My students need 36 historical fiction books for their reading and writing units. Teaching my students a historical fiction unit in reading will not only improve their reading comprehension, but will generate interest and enthusiasm for learning about history. It will also help them make a connection to people of the past. Often students learn about people in history as isolated one-dimensional characters. By reading historical fiction texts, students can learn about the complexities of people of a different time period and see that many of the issues that people dealt with in the past are the same issues we still grapple with today.
Your generous donation can put books into my students hands, books that will bring excitement into learning about the past.
The more books they have available, the wider their experiences will be in learning about history. Please make history come alive for my students!
