My Students

Defining problems, using creativity, applying research, building prototypes, and developing solutions are just some of the skills that students use when they are in my STEM classroom. Through the design process, my students are learning skills that will enable them to succeed in their future. I am currently in my 14th year of teaching middle school science, but I am always looking to implement new techniques into my curriculum to engage students for science.

Science has the ability to excite and amaze students.

When students are engaged in a hands-on activity, they are learning without even realizing it! In my inner city classroom, students of all cultures, creeds, and backgrounds meet with a common goal.

A typical day in my classroom involves my students learning science while working together to solve problems. Many express a desire to work in a STEM career, and nothing makes me happier than continuing to expand my skills and knowledge so that I can support my students in their growth.

My Project

Teachers are always learning, but usually there isn't a budget for teachers to attend the national conference of their subject matter. I wish to attend the National Science Teachers Association National Conference to continue my professional growth and obtain knowledge on the latest science education and pedagogies. This project will cover a portion of the travel expenses and food so I can fully participate in this conference. This conference in particular has an emphasis on Next Generation Science Standards, STEAM education, and Equitable Access to Science Education.

I hope to attend as many of the conference’s hundreds of workshops, demonstrations, and presentations as time allows.

I will return to my classroom and school re-energized and ready to implement my new knowledge and share this knowledge with my colleagues around the district so that we may all better prepare our students to be scientifically and financially literate.
