Learning Goes Large-A Projector to Enhance Participation

My Students

Do you recall how the teacher from the Peanuts movies spoke? That droning, "Wah, wah-wah, wah." That is certainly how I feel because my students seem to tune me out sometimes. So,I am seeking a way to present some of the material to them that is less "Wah-wah"-ish.

The majority of the students in my kindergarten class come from low income households and receive free breakfast and lunch.

They are a varied bunch with some very advanced learners to those who have never had a book read to them and can't sit long enough for me to finish one. We are in a public school in a major city where some teaching materials are difficult to come by.

My Project

I had the privilege of gaining two new partner teachers who both use LCD projectors in their classrooms to present lessons in math, language arts and even the daily calendar and counting activities. I was able to sit in on a lesson where the children were participating in a Starfall calendar lesson. It was big, bright and bold. It captivated them and was presented in a way that was very appealing and encouraged interaction. In the other classroom, the teacher uses the website which coincides with our math series and she presents daily lessons that every child can clearly see. This would be a huge improvement from having to draw on a dusty chalkboard which also takes time away from the actual lesson teaching and discussion. I truly believe that having a projector will enable me to present more up to date, eye catching, and interesting information. The information will be presented by another method than just my voice and chalk drawings. It could deter a few behavior issues, too.

I am a parent myself and have seen the benefits of technology in education.

My children are fortunate enough to attend schools where technology is fairly commonplace and they regularly talk about having had opportunities to do research on line or how the teacher showed them a presentation on a current topic. I want the same types of opportunities for the children in my class. They deserve an equal education. Truly, any extra boost to build their interest in learning is well worth the cost.
