Help me give my students materials for molding and casting modern geometric sculptures.
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Combs's classroom raised $282
This project is fully funded
My Students
Our students are behaviorally challenged, at-risk youth, many of whom have spent very little time in any sort of typical classroom. Our school is a behavior school, meaning we are the institution where students go after being suspended, expelled, or otherwise removed from a traditional school setting before either getting their act together or committing acts egregious enough to land them in jail.
Something in their lives has gone horribly wrong; now they're not only paying for it but trying to learn something new to keep themselves from returning to the juvenile justice system.
These students are still at the early stages of the game where they haven't given up hope for the future. Thus, they see each opportunity to learn a new skill as something that could help turn their lives around.
My Project
Students will use fiberglass material to sculpt geometric shapes into 3 dimensional forms. Some students learn better kinesthetically, with their hands, by making, rather than reading, listening to a lecture or even just watching someone else demonstrate. In order to understand a concept many students need to actually build what they are trying to learn. Even if they "fail" in their efforts to construct what they attempt they'll learn from those failures and their brains will better learn the subject matter.
We're hoping to get some fiberglass as a component to build geometric forms with so they can learn the different shapes as well as basic sculptural techniques.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
