We can all think of a time when school was fun for us. We were probably engaged in a learning activity that felt like play, made us feel successful, and was strengths based. Our classroom needs engaging, fun, educational games to help make learning FUN for my students!
Our school is home to about 300 students in a high poverty, inner city neighborhood.
Our school is highly mobile with almost 20% of our students experiencing homelessness. Despite the challenges that our students face, they are incredibly resilient. The students that learn in my classroom all have low incidence disabilities such as Autism Spectrum Disorders, Intellectual Disabilities, and Down Syndrome. Their vivacious personalities, zest for life, and boldness are a huge part of our school culture. They do not let developmental delays or poverty get in the way of their learning. I truly LOVE my job as their teacher and cannot imagine teaching a different group of children.
My Project
The items we are requesting are GAMES that will make learning basic skills fun. The skills my students are learning have the potential to be very dry. They excel and retain information when it is consistently repeated. Due to their unique learning characteristics, it is my job as their teacher to be extra creative in finding ways to make learning exciting. We are requesting a set of games called JINGO, which is like an adapted version of Bingo, but with pictures. We are also going to work on listening comprehension through a set of games called "What's that Noise?" Because of the complex needs of my students, there are not always commercial products available that can meet all of their individual learning goals. The lamination film, Velcro, and erasers will allow me to create durable games that will fit each one of my little learners!
If my students cannot learn the way school is typically run, then we need to adapt our school day in a way that suits and embraces their uniqueness.
These materials will allow us to make learning fun and exciting while still hitting all of the basic skills that my students need. Thank you!
