Learning from the Past to Forge a Better Future

My students need 15 copies of The Complete Maus: A Survivor's Tale for a unit we will be completing on the dangers of stereotyping and the need for tolerance.

This project is fully funded

My Students

Were you a child who used to hide comic books inside your books and wondered why teachers told you to read, but wouldn't let you read what you wanted? What if you could help a child like yourself learn about a crucial historical topic while building his or her vocabulary and enjoyment of non-fiction

My students are ethnically and socio-economically diverse eighth grade students at an inner-city middle school in Washington, D.C.

I have a mix of students who are gifted, those with special needs and those with and without homes. Many of my students cannot afford books, yet love to learn and read.

My Project

Maus is a Pulitzer Prize winning graphic memoir (a memoir written in comic-style drawings) about the artist's father's experience before, during, and after the Holocaust. This memoir is an excellent teaching tool for students who have special needs in that it allows them to process information in an untraditional format, learn to make inferences by determining what occurs between frames, and clearly visualize difficult metaphors. I will be using this book with all of my students in a unit that will be focused on teaching tolerance. I want to use the history of the Holocaust and current events related to genocide to illustrate the dangers of stereotyping. We will bring this down to the school level to address the issues of intolerance that lead to bullying. I would like for my students to draw inspiration from Maus to develop their own graphic novels related to the dangers of bullying at our school. My students will learn how to use this format to tell their own stories.

These books will allow all of my students to enjoy the magic of Art Spiegelman's writing and storytelling skills.

It is an expensive book and I have many students, therefore, I would like for them to be able to use them in class. Such an experience may inspire those students who do not have a love of reading, storytelling, or history to become interested in these topics. I believe this project will help them get on the path to becoming life-long learners.
