My Students
The school I teach in is a diverse, unique, and special school. Our school houses over 400 students from pre-school up through 6th grade. The school I work at is a Title I school with over 86% free and reduced-price lunch. Our school is considered a cluster school, which means that we support students who enter our country and are placed in our district. We usually have over a hundred refugees come to our school yearly. Our students thrive on the diversity and multiculturalism that is influenced and felt in our school. We accept, we grow, and we learn from one another.
We come from a very low socio-economic status.
Many of our students lack the resources and support that are needed to continue their learning at home. My students hunger for knowledge, expression, and to learn more about diversity and the world through new lenses that we cannot always provide. I cannot wait to supply my students with new literacy that will spark their curiosity, connect them personally, and give them a foundation to grow and respond to.
My Project
The novel, "Save Me a Seat" is about two boys who are put in Special Education. One of these boys comes directly from another country, does not speak the language, and has no friends. He is also very smart, capable, but lacks the language to communicate this to his teachers. He eventually helps another boy out who struggles to learn. Throughout the book, the reader sees a friendship form and can easily see the supports that both boys give to one another. This book is about friendship, acceptance, and communication. A true treasure for students to read as they will relate to the characters throughout the pages of this amazing book.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
