My students are not from a traditional neighborhood school. As an island wide, PreK-12 school, our students come to us from all areas of Staten Island, a borough hit hardest during this time. Not being from one neighborhood makes it even more difficult to reach our students. We cannot just drive by or visit to see that they are ok. Prior to leaving school in March, our school distributed as many devices as they could to families to continue learning from home. However, with over 1,300 families of varied economic backgrounds and needs, these did not go far.
Eight weeks into distance learning and I still have students who are not engaging and working because they are waiting on a device from New York City, a process which takes weeks.
These are students who were previously working, engaging, and, if we were still at school, would be learning. I'd like to help them keep learning now!
My Project
Many of my students are from a varied socioeconomic background and while many are equipped to learn at home, some are still not able to do their distance learning due to lack of technology or shared technology at home.
These Chromebooks will help my students catch up and learn during these difficult times.
Many of my students are still waiting for technology from the city, a process which could take weeks. They are missing instruction as well as opportunities to continue learning face to face each day.
More than half of students from low‑income households
