Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The big, yellow bus pulls down the wheelchair lift and rolls the student off to the waiting hands of my classroom aides. One by one the students arrive in class for another day of learning.

Each student arrives at school a little different.

One student gets off the bus and shows me the story book or toy he brought from home. Another student arrives shuffling her way in with smiles, vocalizations and flapping hands. Two more arrive, anxiously anticipating being taken out of the wheelchairs to greet their classmates and start their work. I teach a class of students with severe intellectual disabilities and low functioning autism. Some of my students are completely ambulatory, able to walk (and run) independently, other are learning to walk, and still others are dependent on myself and my staff for positioning and mobility. My program serves students from multiple areas in my district at a high needs Title 1 school. As the last student arrives she turns her head in her wheelchair and gestures with her nose for someone to come to her, greet her, and go over her schedule for the school day.

My Project

Crunch. Crunch. A common noise in my classroom. Students put together picture schedules of their day using hook and loop tape. Our calendar activities, individual work tasks, academic lessons are all possible by having hook and loop tape affixed to items. This allows us to secure pictures or objects onto other things so that they can be removed and replaced multiple times. My students need multiple repetitions of of activities and skills in order to learn. Hook and loop tape help make our classroom materials reusable. As our day progresses, it never fails that one of the students begins to get restless. Fidgeting, squirming, flapping, vocalizing, even refusing to work can be signs of a sensory need that is going unmet. Lap weights, tactile toys, and vibrating items can all help calm and meet these diverse sensory needs.

These items allow my students better access to their school day.

Hook and loop tape allows the reuse materials innumerable times to to ensure that my students have the repetition needed to acquire new skills. Weighted, tactile, and vibrating sensory items allow my students to have their sensory needs met and continue with their day of learning.
