My students are from the area in and around a small, former plantation town on the Northside of Hawaii Island. My students are ethnically diverse with many families living here for multiple generations. Families are very important here. The community my students come from is mostly agriculture, farming, and ranching; however, after the close of the sugarcane plantation, many now commute to jobs that serve the tourist industry. Sixty plus percent of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch. The building where my students attend art class was built in 1926 and our school itself was established in 1889.
As an educator, my goal is to create a learning environment where the student's voice is empowered and a love for lifelong learning instilled.
I want to provide a safe, inspiring atmosphere where students from diverse cultures, perspectives, and abilities are encouraged to engage in creative thinking and exploration.
My Project
The TAB classroom is an active, self-directed learning environment where student initiate and create their artwork. TAB stands for teaching for artistic behavior.
In this classroom, students explore, play, and create in various work spaces using the guiding principles of TAB.
Students learn how artists work, the students is the artist and the classroom is their studio. Students have art materials and tools available to initiate and create their artwork.
As artists, students will practice, observe and evaluate the outcomes of their work. Students will determine their next steps through reflection and revision, self-evaluation and presentation.
