I teach twenty-five happy and excited-to-learn third graders, and all day long they have fun growing and thinking, and trying their best. Our school is a wonderful, small multicultural school located in Los Angeles. Approximately 30% of our students school qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and everyone receives free breakfast.
Our school specializes in integrating art and technology with our academic subjects.
My students learn best when I generate excitement for learning. My students want to learn financial literacy by researching stocks to invest in and playing an online stock market game on our classroom iPads.
My Project
My students buy clothes and use video games, but they have never had a chance to think about what company makes the product and what it is like to run a company or invest in a company. Through the online Stock Market Game, my students will be able to select different companies to invest their money in. They will research stocks to determine if the company they plan to invest in is doing well, and if this is a good time to invest. The Stock Market Game will provide each team with $100,000 to invest with. The transactions will be just like the actual stock market, but this is a virtual learning experience, rather than with real money and real stocks.
This project is requesting an iPad so each investment team has the ability to research the stocks they want to invest in, and track their stocks in our classroom each week or each day!
We will be competing with a sixth grade class at our school that is also playing the online Stock Market Game. How exciting for my third graders to see if they can make financial decisions that will help their stock value grow during the school year!
I have also requested a surge protector with a 15 foot cord so my students can share their research and stock success using our projector. Currently, our surge protector's cord is too short so our projector can't show very much on the screen.
My students will have the ability to buy more stocks and sell stocks throughout the school year with the Stock Market Game. Having enough iPads so every team can participate would be fantastic.
