My Students

Earning? Saving? Budgeting? Spending! What in the world? An article by the CEO of a financial literacy firm said, "You don't teach a child to brush their teeth when they are 18." I want to provide my students with an opportunity for a solid financial education and the fifth grade is the perfect time!

My students face so many challenges, but they realize that education is the vehicle to drive them towards a more promising future.

With so many issues, it is my mission as their educator to take them away and rescue them from their pressing worries through the joys of meaningful experiences and exposure to what life has to offer. Our school is 100% poverty stricken; with only one other in the state of South Carolina. We do not take this rank as an excuse to have a pity party, but rather as a means of motivation. We strive to plant seeds of hope and reassure the students that education is the key that unlocks the doors of opportunity and future success. By understanding that there is more to life than what meets the eye, it is my belief that my students will do what it takes to beat the odds and defy the statistics. My students will embrace the world of education and all it has to offer.

My Project

In an effort to become financially savvy, my students need two iPad Minis and protective cases to integrate technology and game-based learning. Like never before, my students will finally be able to use a 'Finance Center' daily, to include during independent reading time. United States Secretary of Education Arne Duncan stated: "At a time when going to college has never been more important, it's never been more expensive, and our nation's families haven't been in this kind of financial duress since the great depression. And so what we have is just sort of a miraculous opportunity simply by stopping the subsidy to banks when we already have the risk of loans. We can plow those savings into our students. And we can make college dramatically more affordable, tens of billions of dollars over the next decade." This quote is the driving force behind this project! For this reason, we strive to, "Learn Today with Tomorrow in Mind!".

My students will be able to develop their own positive attitude when it comes to spending and saving money.

The 'Finance Center' will help my students learn about money in the real world. They will understand the experience of saving money, earning money, budgeting and so much more! This project will be a life changer!
