Hello! I teach 2nd grade at a public school in Chicago. I have 27 eager students in my class! 17 of my students are English Language Learners, still acquiring basic English skills and 4 of my students have special needs. Given my students diverse backgrounds and needs, there is a wide range of academic abilities in my classroom. Over half of my students really struggle with reading - they have trouble understanding what they are reading and they also have a very difficult time with phonics and fluency (being able to read with speed and accuracy). Likewise, many of my students struggle with vocabulary, especially my students who speak English as their second language. However, my students all LOVE games! I have brought a borrowed game of Scrabble into class (which unfortunately was missing many letters...) and the students had a great time practicing their vocabulary words! They were "playing" and learning at the same time! From seeing their enjoyment and ability to learn through games, I am writing to ask for language games to help my students connect with and ENJOY learning about language arts, improving their reading skills and enhancing their vocabularies. I have asked for games such as Scrabble Junior and Boggle because kids love these games, so they will want to play and learn! At the same time, I can be teaching them vocabulary words and assessing their reading skills. I would like to be able to set up a language arts games station that my students can go to in small groups during language arts. It is so important to interest and hook students into learning! Interesting materials and games in the classroom grab my students interest and keep them motivated to learn! I appreciate you taking the time to read my proposal!
