My Students

I teach at a Title I school on the Upper Westside of Manhattan. My students come from economically marginalized communities and many have weak educational backgrounds. All of my students come to school eager to learn something new every day even if the teenager in them cannot demonstrate the emotion. My students have many personal challenges that make school and the requirements of school particularly daunting. That said, all of my students are held to the highest of expectations, both intellectual and professional.

My students are inquisitive and curious about other cultures.

Many of my students live very insular lives even though they live in NYC. While my students are exposed to other peoples and cultures, that contact is superficial. In my Social Studies classroom, units are anchored in geography, driven by primary sources and analyzed through complex secondary sources. Social Studies is the perfect vehicle to teach history, inculcate professionalism and cultural capital to societies most marginalized students.

My Project

Like many people reading this mini-grant, I remember well the year in grammar school when we began to learn cursive script. I remember thinking that the writing looked like a secret, beautiful code. Once we mastered our letters, everything written for the rest of grammar school had to be written in cursive. We had entered the world of the adult!

Sadly, this right of passage is no longer experienced by American children.

Only handfuls of American students are taught cursive. This reality breaks my heart as it is clear that millions of American children will never be able to read the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution of the United States in its original format.

As decoration for my classroom this year, I added a poster of the original Declaration of Independence. I was shocked to learn that the majority of my students had trouble reading the primary source or could not read it at all (the freshman classes). What does that mean for our democracy if students cannot read the original source? What civic vulnerabilities are laid bare?

My students have expressed a sadness that they were never taught cursive and a confusion as well as to why they were denied the opportunity at a younger age when it is easier to learn. When writing in cursive, both the left and right sides of the brain are activated. Students who can easily get frustrated with writing seem to enjoy the process of cursive.

I believe that students should have every opportunity to learn and grow. As a Humanities teacher, I have the time and ability to take a step back and teach students this most beautiful of writing forms.
