This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Bringing Junior Scholastic magazines into my classroom will create meaningful opportunities for students to engage with current events in a way that is accessible, age-appropriate, and exciting. These magazines will make a significant difference by providing high-quality, nonfiction reading materials that are specifically designed for middle school learners. With features like vibrant visuals, glossaries, guided reading questions, and critical thinking prompts, Junior Scholastic helps students navigate complex topics while supporting language development and comprehension.
My goal for this project is to help students become informed, curious, and confident individuals who can engage thoughtfully with the world around them.
I want to cultivate critical thinking and media literacy skills, encouraging students to ask questions, form opinions, and support their ideas with evidence. These magazines will serve as both a learning tool and a platform for meaningful classroom discussions, helping students move beyond surface-level social media content and toward a deeper understanding of global and national events.
What makes my students special is their resilience and eagerness to learn, even when resources are limited. Many have never held a print magazine before, and most rely on social media for their information, which can often be misleading or incomplete. They are bright, capable, and full of potential, but they need the right tools to help them thrive. Junior Scholastic will offer them a new way to see the world, one that empowers them to think critically, express themselves confidently, and engage in civil discourse with their peers.
