My Project

Compassion is defined as having a sympathetic understanding of distress being experienced by others and a desire to help alleviate those feelings.

Since children are still learning how to understand the thoughts and feelings of others, learning compassion is an important part of their education.

My students will learn to see the world through the eyes of another person learn about each other through our daily morning meeting, discussion of experiences, and literature-based lessons. We will explore how our actions can play a role how others feel and how they can also play a role in helping someone else feel more comfortable. We will use the "Would You Rather?" books and resources from the TPT gift cards to facilitate discussions that will help us get to know each other and explore differing points of view.

My students will learn to work toward alleviating suffering in others through secret missions performed as individuals and as teams. The Secret Missions kindness cards will turn our class into a room full of secret agents, out to perform acts of kindness around our school. Small gestures can mean a lot when someone is sad, anxious, or feeling other types of distress. A smile, kind word, or act of kindness can be a source of encouragement or even turn someone's day around.

I will measure the success in my students' understanding of compassion through their participation and interactions as evidenced through their secret mission checklists and observations. Students completing all of the secret missions will be celebrated in our "Hall of Fame." The plushies, shoe charms, stickers, and other items will be PBIS incentives to recognize positive interactions and growth while learning about compassion.
