Learning Compassion for Others Through Reading and Writing Poetry
My students need a extra large die cut of the silhouette of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and books about autism, accepting others, and learning to appreciate the diversity of others through reading and writing poetry.
I teach twenty-six happy and excited to learn third graders, and all day long we have fun growing and thinking, and trying our best. This year I want to continue our exploration of poetry by introducing my students to poems that come from diverse cultures.
We are a wonderful multicultural school located in Los Angeles, and we have students from kindergarten through sixth grade.
Over 35% of the students at our school qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and everyone receives free breakfast daily.
My Project
My students love reading funny poems, but I want to take their learning to a deeper level by introducing them to poetry and books that teach compassion and tolerance of others. I have requested a book that will help my students understand the students that have autism at our school. I hope this story, My Best Friend Will, told in photographs about two friends, will help inspire my students to become friends with the special education students at our school. I have also requested poetry books about kids growing up in Hispanic neighborhoods, Asian, and African American neighborhoods. My students will read poems, write their own poems, and then create a PowerPoint poem presentation that they will show as they recite their poems live for family and parents, and other students at our school.
By embracing people of all cultures, and writing poems about their own culture, my students will learn to be compassionate citizens.
Our school is a fantastic environment of many cultures, so reading poetry, discussing the poems, and then writing our own poems will be a meaningful unit for my students every year. Especially in our diverse city of Los Angeles, it is essential that our students learn to embrace many cultures, and therefore grow up with compassion for others.
The jumbo size Martin Luther King, Jr. die cut will be large enough to hold my students' original poems about Dr. King and the tolerance he dreamed and spoke about during the Civil Rights era in the 1960s.
