My Students

I serve a school where over 80% of our students come from low-income families and receive free or reduced-price lunch. Approximately, 45% are African American, 45% are Hispanic, and 20% are English language learners. My sixth-grade students are active and budding young adults, but they are still children. They have been given challenges that even some adults have a hard time dealing with. They come from very diverse households. They want to learn and do well even when the statistics are not in their favor. Many go home and care for siblings while their main caregiver works a second job, while some are homeless and need to worry more about where their next meal comes from instead of their math assignment.

I want to provide a learning environment where every student can come into and be successful.

I am working towards transforming my traditional classroom. I want my students to have all the opportunities to have a choice in how they learn with flexible seating options, a variety of math center activities, STEM/STEAM opportunities, and a classroom behavior system that encourages students to learn more each and every day.

My Project

Having the right technology opens doors in a classroom and can turn the most basic lessons into real-life experience and increase engagement. Technology can give my struggling students more ways to practice their basic skills. My high achievers will have a new way to share their knowledge with others. I am at the beginnings of incorporating more online lessons so students may learn and be challenged at their pace.

My students need and want the exposure to more STEM/STEAM activities.

We have received several coding robots and having an iPad will allow use to mange the coding software easier. In addition to using the iPad with our coding robots, students will have the opportunity to make videos for review lessons. The lesson videos will be student created and made available to view on our Google Classroom as needed by other students or even teachers. I can also use the iPad to enhance math stations and provide additional learning opportunities for my early finishers.

There are so many new and engaging applications on the market I wish to explore also with my students. I can only imagine the different types of learning we can do with an iPad in our hands.
