These students are so amazing. They work hard and take pride in exhibiting excellence inside and outside of the classroom. They are eager to learn. Many of our class discussions are rich and full of personal experiences that they share eagerly.
My Project
I would like to teach my students character education through novels. The genre of the novels I am requesting is realistic fiction. The lessons in these novels address many of the issues our Black and Brown children face.
Reading these novels as a class will give us the opportunity to have difficult conversations and discuss strategies for dealing with social issues they might encounter this school year and when they leave our school for 7th grade.
I will use these books to help teach my students lessons that they can use for the rest of their lives.
I read these novels with students at my previous school, and I got to witness those students become empathetic and more considerate of their peers. In addition, our class had weekly "family meetings"(Peace circles) to discuss social/emotional issues they were having with classmates. The meetings were restorative in nature and caused students to be comfortable sharing how they were feeling. I am certain that the lessons my current students will learn, as a result of reading these novels, are invaluable.
I'm so excited about getting these books for our classroom library. I look forward to our transparent conversations as we read each chapter.
