Learning Centers for Special Needs Students

My Students

Everyone has strengths. For my students, their strengths range widely, from art, to puzzles and logic, to reading and language. As special needs students, they learn best beyond paper-and-pencil lessons. They need hands-on materials that will inspire their interest and cater to their strengths.

My students are severely cognitively disabled and exempted from state tests.

Their learning is measured in a variety of ways, using portfolios. They need interesting, hands-on materials to engage and challenge them, and to help them demonstrate what they have learned. This is the first time my school has had a class so unique, and so this is a unique opportunity for me as their teacher to create a space where their diverse learning needs can be met.

My Project

These materials will help me create learning centers where students can explore their interests and strengths. With centers, students have the choice of which activity to engage in--math skills, using flashcards; art, using paint, pastels, and professional-grade paper; reading in a cozy corner complete with pillows and bookmarks; or logical and spacial reasoning with puzzles. In this way. students can pursue their interests and practice important skills. My students need pillows and bookmarks, puzzles and games, math flash cards, and art supplies for four learning centers.

Learning centers encourage choice, independence, and self-awareness.

It is incredibly important that disabled students develop these traits, so that they can become capable and responsible adults. Donating to this project will help ensure that my students have the academic, social, and inter-personal skills to succeed in life.
