My Students
I am super excited to announce that I will be helping to open a new middle school in West Oakland this Fall! We will be building our school beginning with 6th grade. Our mission at Envision is to ensure that children have the opportunity to achieve academically and personally through authentic, project-based learning, in order to be successful in college and beyond - especially those who will be the first in their family to attend college.
For many of my students with special needs, middle school is their first time transitioning into general education classrooms.
They are learning, like many of their peers, how to move between classes, organize their supplies, and deal with social pressures. I want to make sure that I create a Learning Center that is warm, safe, and inviting for all students, as well as an intentional learning space. Help build a safe haven for students to grow, make mistakes, and learn.
My Project
Middle school is overwhelming, being a pre-teen is too. Designing my Learning Center as a place where fidgeting is ok, so is needing some quiet time, is my goal in creating a safe space.
It is important that students have a place to feel safe amongst the chaos of growing up.
The table is designed to ensure that when working with small groups, all students feel equally seen by the teacher, and equally able to be supported. The wobble chairs allow busy bodies to wiggle while remaining in a task, and the weighted blanket offers sensory input like a hug when a student is feeling to anxious, or sad.
