First grade is the time to build the foundation of a child's education and their love of school. I work in a Title I school with a very diverse population. These children enter school with a variety of abilities, strengths, and weaknesses. Some children are English language learners (ESL), some are from broken homes, and others from stable families. Although my students are 6 and 7 years old, they are so eager to learn and work hard every day to read, write, and do whatever is asked of them. I have taught them in kindergarten and was given the opportunity to loop with them (this means that I'm taking the whole class to first grade).
We did not end kindergarten or start first grade the way we hoped but our bond is strong and it is keeping us going during these tough times.
Virtual learning has been rough but my students are making the best of it.
My Project
Virtual learning has been really hard, especially on my little ones. Most of my class has spent the last year learning virtually. They have stepped up to the challenge and have worked hard all year.
I would love to be able to deliver summer resource bags full of fun and engaging activities to my students in hopes that they would be encouraged to continue working over the summer.
Inside each bag would be dice and playing cards to practice math facts in a fun way, a sight word book, chalk, writing notebook, and ice-cream cone writing pen. These items we used daily in our classroom to help us creatively learn our sight words, practice our writing and strengthen our math. I just want them to continue working hard, make them smile, and encourage them to always do their BEST.
